Cleaning Foam From Beer Bottles

A beer company had an issue when that was bottling beer and that they wished to solve.

What was the Issue?

The company were producing 35,000 bottles per hour in two different sizes; the 24 oz. (710 mL) bottles and the “stick it in a brown paper bag” 32 oz. (946 mL) bottles.  The problem area was located at the wash system after capping the beer bottles.  They sprayed a solution of water and a low-concentration of chlorine dioxide as an antimicrobial agent.  Sanitation is at a premium to eliminate any bacteria growth.

Solution that was provided by our principal Exair USA?

Currently, they were using two sets of three liquid nozzles that were spraying a flat pattern at the top and both sides of the bottle, just under the cap (reference photo below).  The issue that they were experiencing was too much solution was being used as well as creating a slip hazard on the floor outside the wash system.  They tried to reduce the liquid pressure to lessen the amount of solution, but the stream was not strong enough to clean properly.  So, they asked if the EXAIR Air Atomizing Nozzles could be a better solution.

Washing system

With liquid solutions, the smaller the particle size, the greater the surface area.  With higher surface areas, less liquid can be used to cover the same target area.  For this application; The model EF1040SS External Mix Atomizing Nozzle with a narrow-angle flat fan spray pattern was recommended by Mr John Ball (Application Engineer of Exair USA). The liquid spray pattern matched their current nozzles, and the liquid flowrate produced by this Atomizing Nozzle was within their recommendation.  By adding compressed air, it is possible to shear liquid into much smaller particle sizes.  And as mentioned above, it is possible to use less liquid to cover the same area.  Another feature of the EXAIR External Mix Atomizing Nozzles, the liquid and air pressures are independent.  Unlike the liquid nozzles that they were using, the liquid pressure can be changed while the air pressure can be increased.  Now, they can get a hard-hitting force to remove the beer foam while using less liquid.  This was exactly what this customer needed.

EF1040SS

They were suggested for six pieces of the EF1040SS to replace each liquid nozzle to keep the same coverage around the caps.  The stainless-steel construction makes the Atomizing Nozzle corrosive resistant for Food and Beverage applications.  The flat fan pattern is able to reach multiple bottles and hit the target area evenly.  The amount of solution can be controlled by the liquid pressure and by the manual liquid needle valve.  So, the setup can be “dialed” in for the exact amount of cleaning solution needed to clean the bottles without flooding the floor.  This was important for safety as well as saving the company money by using less solution.  For this application, they were able to use about 20% less liquid.

If you have high-value liquids that you would like to spray evenly, efficiently, and effectively; EXAIR  Air Atomizing Nozzles can do that for you.  We the Vivek Engineers  in Bangalore, offer three different port sizes with a variety of liquid flowrates and spray patterns.  If you would like to discuss more about an application or need help in selecting the correct model, one of our application will be happy to assist you.

New EXAIR Product Alert: Introducing the TurboBlast Safety Air Gun

For almost 40 years now, EXAIR Corporation has been devoted to a singular goal of providing quiet, safe, and efficient compressed air products for industry. In that time, our product offering has grown considerably…and it’s just taken another leap. I offer for your consideration, dear reader, the Turbo Blast Safety Air Gun:

Five different Nozzles, three different extension lengths, optional gate valves give a great deal of flexibility in our newest product line offering.

Starting at the “business end”, these use our tried-and-true High Force Super Air Nozzles. With up to 23 pounds (10.43 Kg) of applied force, these are among the hardest hitting compressed air products on the market. That’s almost 28 times the force of our standard Super Air Nozzle, and is ideal for large area cleanup, slag or flash removal, blowing off stubborn debris & liquid, etc. To protect the engineered Air Nozzle and ensure long life, we’ve included a replaceable protective guard, preventing damage from incidental contact in the aggressive applications these are aimed at. Five different Super Air Nozzles are offered:

  • 3/4 NPT (Zinc Aluminum or 316 Stainless Steel)
    • Consumes 91 SCFM @80psig
    • Applies 4.5 lbs of force @12″ from target
    • 23″ wide pattern @48″ from target
  • 1 NPT (Zinc Aluminum or 316SS)
    • Consumes 135 SCFM @80psig
    • Applies 6.6 lbs of force @12″ from target

Siphon Fed Air Atomizing Spray Nozzles

Siphon fed nozzles are a great alternative for spraying where no liquid pressure is available. EXAIR has 3 sizes from 1/8 NPT, 1/4 NPT and 1/2 NPT nozzles along with
“No-Drip” nozzles in the same sizes. Siphon fed nozzles require no liquid pressure and can be used with gravity fed liquids or lift liquids from a siphon height as much as 36′ (91 cm). Siphon fed nozzles work best with thinner liquids up to 200 centipoise.

EXAIR Air Atomizing Nozzles are manufactured from 303 stainless steel for durability and corrosion resistance. The siphon fed nozzles can be easily implemented where a tank can be installed and lower the cost of the installation by not requiring a liquid pump, just point of use compressed air.

No Drip Siphon Fed Round Pattern Atomizing Nozzle

In addition to the sizes and no drip option the siphon fed nozzle comes in two spray patters. The round pattern offers more liquid pass through and can be used in cleaning, rinsing, cooling and coating applications.

2″ Super Air Amplifier Exhausts Welding Fumes

EXAIR’s Super Air Amplifiers utilize a patented shim design to maintain critical positioning of component parts. This allows a precise amount of compressed air to be released at exact intervals toward the center of the Super Air Amplifier. This creates a constant, high velocity outlet flow across the entire cross-sectional area. Free, ambient air is entrained through the unit, resulting in high amplification ratios. The balanced outlet airflow minimizes wind shear to produce sound levels far lower than other similar air movers.

While most applications utilize the outlet flow of the Super Air Amplifier to blow off or cool a part or material, the ability of the Super Air Amplifier to entrain large amounts of ambient air can also be utilized to convey light materials or to draw in dust, smoke, or fumes from the surrounding environment.

Recently our principal worked with a customer on an application to install the Model 120022 Super Air Amplifier in welding booths. They did have a current fume extraction system in place, but due to the distance between the vent hoods and the operation some of the fumes were still not being captured. The suggestion was to install a 2” Model 120022 at each booth near the origin of the welding fumes. As the exhaust side of the Super Air Amplifiers come in sizes of ¾”, 1-1/4”, 2”, 4”, and 8” the exhaust flow can be ducted with standard size hose. The placed a 2” ID hose onto the exhaust of the Super Air Amplifier which allowed the fumes to be captured into the intake of the amplifier and be carried towards the vent hood.

This eliminated a safety issue for the operators and was much less expensive than redesigning the entire welding booths and current extraction system. With no moving parts to wear out, the Super Air Amplifier requires absolutely zero maintenance when supplied with clean, dry compressed air. After installing onto each of their welding booths, operators were pleased with the performance and we were able to eliminate the safety hazard for this facility.

Coanda effect

 What is Coanda effect?
The Coanda effect is the tendency of a fluid jet to stay attached to a convex surface. It is named after Romanian inventor Henri Coandă, who described it as "the tendency of a jet of fluid emerging from an orifice to follow an adjacent flat or curved surface and to entrain fluid from the surroundings so that a region of lower pressure develops.

Compressed air flows through an inlet (1) into the plenum chamber of the Super Air Knife. The flow is directed to a precise, slotted orifi ce. As the primary airflow exits the thin slotted nozzle (2), it follows a flat surface that directs the airflow in a perfectly straight line. This creates a uniform sheet of air across the entire length of the Super Air Knife. Velocity loss is minimized and force is maximized as the room air (3) is entrained into the primary airstream at a ratio of 40:1. The result is a well defined sheet of laminar airflow with hard-hitting force and minimal wind shear.

Henri-Marie Coanda (1885-1972) discovered the Coanda Effect in1930. He observed that a stream of air (fluid) emerging from a nozzle tends to follow a nearby curved surface, if the curvature of the surface or angle the surface makes with the stream is not too sharp. For example, if a stream of fluid is flowing along a solid surface which is curved slightly from the stream, the fluid will tend to follow the surface.
A number EXAIR products are designed to utilize the Coanda Effect and aid their performance. In some products, the Coanda Effect aids to create an amplification area where additional ambient air is drawn into the total airflow to increase total volume of air upon a target. This creates a more efficient and effective product. Also, since not as much compressed air is required, the noise levels decrease for products like EXAIR’s air knives, air nozzles, air jets and air amplifiers. EXAIR has been successful with positive impact for compressed air energy savings and noise reductions helping us meet or exceed OSHA Standard.

Engineered Air Nozzles and Jets – There is a Difference.

EXAIR’s Engineered Air Nozzles and Air Jets provide a superior solution to minimize compressed air usage and reduce noise levels for compressed air blow-off operations.

Air Nozzles and Jets – when compared to commonly used open copper tubes, open pipes, and commercially available air nozzles the compressed air savings can be as high as 80%. With less compressed air, sound levels are greatly reduced.  A 10 dBA noise level reduction is typical.  All EXAIR Air Nozzles and Jets meet OSHA guidelines for dead end pressure and sound level exposure requirements.

EXAIR Nozzles are designed and manufactured to take advantage of the Coanda (wall attachment of a high velocity fluid) effect which can amplify the airflow up to 25 times. The compressed air exits through the small holes on the nozzle which entrains the surrounding air. The effect from this is a high volume, high velocity blast using less compressed air.  EXAIR manufactures many sizes and styles of air nozzles from the smallest, but quite powerful Atto Super Air Nozzles to our largest 1-1/4 NPT Super Air Nozzle.  We also offer Flat Super Air Nozzles, and the Back Blow style nozzle for cleaning out tubes, pipes, channels or holes from 1/4″ to 16″ in diameter.

All of our Air Nozzles are engineered to meet or exceed OSHA Standard 1910.24(b) for 30 PSIG dead end pressure, they cannot be dead-ended as there is always a route for the air to escape so the outlet pressure will never reach 30 PSIG. In addition, our products are going to meet the OSHA Standard CFR 29 – 1910.95(a) for allowable noise exposure levels.

EXAIR Air Jets also utilize the Coanda effect to produce air motion in their surroundings.  A small amount of compressed air (1) is throttled through an internal ring nozzle above sonic velocity.  A vacuum is produced, pulling in large volumes of surrounding, or ‘free’ air, through an around the jet (2).  The exit flow is the combination of the two air sources (3).

Exair manufactures Air Jets in two types, High Velocity, and Adjustable with materials of construction of brass and Type 303 Stainless Steel.  The High Velocity Air Jet uses a changeable shim to set the gap, controlling the force and flow of the air.  The Adjustable does not use a shim, and has a micrometer gap indicator and locking ring to allow for varying force and flow performance.

If you would like to discuss blow off, noise levels, dead end pressure or any of Exair intelligent compressed air usage solutions, Please contact us.
