Super Air Wipe Helps in Testing Wire Insulation

A cable manufacturer sent to Exair, videos of his operation as they needed to improve their efficiency in removing water from the surface of the insulation. Their system began with the insulation being applied to the outside of the wire cable, being dipped into a water trough to harden the insulation, travel through the blow-off device, then into a spark tester.  The spark tester checks the insulation for imperfections.  Also called a hi-pot tester (high-potential), a high voltage is used to create a large potential across the insulation.  Any defects in the insulation can be detected, but it is very sensitive to surface contamination.  Being that the water is very conductive, it had to be removed or it would give a false result.  They were using a home-made circular blowing device (photo below) to blow the water off after dipping.  When they were at the higher line speeds, the blow-off device was not removing the water completely from the insulation.  This would cause the spark tester to alarm and stop production.
This company makes cables ranging from 10mm to 25mm in diameter. With various types of voltage ratings on the wire, the insulation was made with different types of materials and thicknesses.  So, the line speeds could range from 20 to 200 meter/minute.  Being that they needed a better way to remove the wire, they searched for wire and cable blow-off devices. They came across the Super Air Wipe from EXAIR.  The design of the Super Air Wipe blows compressed air at a 30 degree angle toward the center in a 360 degree air pattern, just like a cone.  It uses the Coanda effect to entrain as much ambient air into your compressed air to maximize force and efficiency.  Because of the variations in diameters and speeds, I suggested two different sizes, the model 2401 and model 2402.  The model 2401 has an I.D. of 1” (25mm), and it would work best with the cable diameters of 15mm and under.  The model 2402 has an I.D. of 2” (51mm), and it can handle the cables that are above 15mm in size. This pair of Super Air Wipes would give the customer the most consistent results no matter what line speeds that they ran.  With the split design of the Super Air Wipe, it makes it easy to clamp around the cable and change from one size to the other.

As they removed their home-made unit and attached the Super Air Wipes, they noticed a few things. The spark tester stopped getting false alarms.  This made the production process run smoother; even at the faster line speeds.  They noticed that the Super Air Wipe was much quieter.  With a decibel rating of 77 dBA, the nearby operators were very happy with this choice.  Also, they noticed that the Super Air Wipes used much less compressed air.  Because the design utilizes the “free” ambient air, less compressed air is required.  This would save them a lot of money in their electric bill and the stress on the compressed air system.  If your company needs to blow off cables, hoses, pipes, or any cylindrical type parts, the Super Air Wipe could be a great product for you.

Digital Flowmeter

EXAIR’s Digital Flow meter is an effortless way to observe compressed air consumption & waste. The exact amount of compressed air being used downstream is accurately shown on the digital display. Identifying costly leaks or inefficient air products makes it possible to save thousands of dollars per year in compressed air waste.
The LED display on the Digital Flowmeter directly indicates the SCFM of airflow through that pipe (other flowmeters require the reading to be multiplied by a specific conversion factor to be accurate).EXAIR’s Digital Flowmeter has two models available for use on schedule 40 iron pipe- one designed for 1”& the other for 2”.Calibration is done on each Digital Flowmeter for the specific pipe size it is mounted to.
The design of the Digital Flowmeter is made for permanent mounting to the pipe. The user is required to drill two 3/16” diameter holes through the pipe using the drill bit & locating fixture. The two flow sensing probes of the flow meter are inserted in these holes. Once the clamp is tightened the unit seals to the pipe. There is no requirement of cutting, welding, adjustments or calibration.

Digital Sound Level Meter

EXAIR’s Model 9104 Digital Sound Level Meter is an easy to use instrument that can measure and monitor the sound level pressure in a wide variety of industrial environments. The source of loud noises can be quickly identified and isolated so corrective measure can be taken to reduce or eliminate the problem. For compressed aire noise, it is often as simple as replacing the existing inefficient blowoffs with EXAIR's engineered compressed aire products such as the Super Air Knife, Super Air Amplifier or Super Air Nozzles. In many cases, the EXAIR products can reduce noise levels by 10dBA which is perceived as cutting the sound volume in half.
Hearing loss induced by high noise in the workplace is a common problem. Exposure to high noise levels for an extended period of time can lead to permanent hearing loss for workers not wearing proper hearing protection. The Digital Sound Level Meter can help employers protect workers by monitoring noise levels so they don't exceed the limits shown in OSHA Standard 29 CFR – 1910.95(a). Failure to comply can result in hefty fines.

Accurate and responsive, the Digital Sound Level Meter measures the decibels of the sound and displays the reading on the large LCD display that has a backlight button for easier viewing. An "F/S" response time button provides a choice of slow response measurements for comparatively stable noise measurement or fast for varying noise. The “Max Hold” setting will measure the maximum noise level of sounds and update continuously if a louder sound is detected. Certification of accuracy and calibration traceable to NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) is included.

Super Ion Air Wipes

EXAIR's Super Ion Air Wipe provides a uniform 360° ionized airstream that is easy to clamp around a part for eliminating static electricity and contaminants. It is ideal for use on pipe, cable, extruded shapes, hose, wire and more. It maximizes ionized airflow while minimizing compressed air consumption.
The Super Ion Air Wipe provides total coverage of the part moving through it. The high volume, high velocity flow attaches itself to the surface and wipes it down with the static eliminating ions. The airflow stays attached to the surface and is effective up to 15' (4.6m) away from where the Super Ion Air Wipe is mounted. An optional pressure regulator provides infinite control of the air volume and velocity. Increasing the pressure increases the forceful wiping action. Lower pressures provide excellent coverage with much lower force and velocity.

The Super Ion Air Wipe is the easy way to provide uniform coverage around a continuously moving material. The hinged design, allowing the Air Wipe to open, makes threading continuous wire, tube or extrusions unnecessary. Arranging a series of ionizers around the surface would provide uneven airflow and prove to be costly. The split design of the Super Ion Air Wipe solves that problem by making it easy to clamp around the surface of the material moving through it, eliminating the need for threading or several ionizers.

The Super Ion Air Wipe is lightweight and easy to mount using the tapped holes on the back. It can also be held in place with rigid pipe. Coupling brackets that hold each half of the Super Ion Air Wipe together are provided which can be installed or removed quickly if required.

Stainless Steel Super Air Knife Used in Mango Processing

Recently, Exair Person was working with a customer who specializes in post-harvest fruit processing. In this case, they were processing mangos from complete fruit down into cubes which are subsequently cleaned and packaged into plastic bags and then cardboard boxes for use in other food products.
When the customer contacted to Exair, The Customer was using a stainless steel pipe with holes drilled into it to de-water the fruit chunks after being sprayed to clean the individual pieces. The Customer  was using stainless steel pipe as they had a requirement for stainless steel construction due to being food grade facility. The problem with the pipe was that the airflow didn’t provide an even blowing force across the full, 30 inch width of the vibratory conveyor. The pipe solution also used quite a lot of compressed air. Unfortunately the customer could not measure what it was, but they gave  the number and size of the holes drilled into it. From that information, Exair people could determine that they were using about 150 SCFM of compressed air at this one location.

And so, with the ineffectiveness of the pipe as well as the high air consumption, the customer went looking for something better. That’s when they found EXAIR Stainless Steel Super Air Knives on Exair's web site. After some quick discussion to sort out the width of the conveyor and to establish what the need was, Exair people settled on model 110030SS (30” 303 Stainless Steel Super Air Knife) to be mounted across the width of the conveyor (see photo above).
With the Super Air Knife installed, the customer was able to achieve the effectiveness he needed for the de-watering and at an airflow rate that was 42% less compressed air use than what he had before. Some of the other benefits that they were able to achieve without even being conscious of it were the enhanced safety of the OSHA compliant Super Air Knife and the sound level was cut dramatically as well.
EXAIR’s Super Air Knives are used many times in processing and packaging applications to provide a non-contact method for de-watering, blowing off dust, moving product off to one side, drying, ejecting and many more applications like these.

Deep Hole Vac-u-Gun Cleans Printed Circuit Board (PCB).

Deep Hole Vac-u-Gun Cleans Printed Circuit Board (PCB).

An electronics component manufacturer produces high quality, flexible and rigid printed circuit boards (PCB’s) for a wide range of applications.. They were looking for a more reliable solution to clean dust particles from their DIMM or Dual In-Line Memory Module sockets on PCB’s. This particular process is very critical as any dust or debris that remains in the socket, will cause them to fail inspection and the need to be reworked or ultimately considered lost product and remanufactured.
circuit board
Example of a circuit board
They were currently using compressed air blowing through a small open tube to blow out the sockets. While this was successful in some cases, in others they were seeing the blown particulate settle in another location on the board which would lead to the conditions mentioned above. Their thinking was to have a system where they could blow out the small areas on the circuits, while also having a way to vacuum or carry the particulate away from the area. They were looking into a traditional vacuum hood system but these units tend to be for larger industrial type applications where their process was a much smaller scale ranging from 50mm up to 200mm. Another concern was with the boards being so small and lightweight , the vacuum system may try to vacuum the PCB’s themselves.
After discussing the details of the application, Exair Person recommended they use our Deep Hole Vac-u-Gun in the application. The Deep Hole Vac-u-Gun features a small blow tube that upon squeezing the trigger, provides a burst of air to lift or loosen dust or particulate trapped in small holes or cavities. The unit simultaneously provides vacuum that is able to collect the released fines and carry them away from the area, removing the potential for further contamination.
